Assessment of Horse Condition in Practice

Assessing a horse’s body condition is one of the fundamental skills for anyone involved in equine nutrition. However, this is also where the greatest mistakes often occur in practice. A layperson’s perception is frequently distorted. Professional evaluation, on the other hand, is based on multiple aspects: Body Condition Score (BCS), Musculus Condition Score (MCS), and the individual’s conformation and constitution.

Available scientific studies, which I also fully confirm from practical experience, indicate that overestimation of condition is currently significantly more common than underestimation. Research repeatedly shows that horse owners tend to perceive their horses as thinner than they actually are, which leads to chronic overfeeding and associated health complications.

Body Condition Score (BCS)

The Body Condition Score is a system for evaluating fat reserves in horses. The most commonly used method is the 9-point Henneke scale, where:

  • 1 = extreme emaciation
  • 9 = severe obesity

The following anatomical regions are assessed:

  • neck (fat deposition along the crest)
  • withers
  • area behind the shoulder
  • ribs
  • loin
  • tail head

Fat is typically deposited in these areas. However, evaluation is not based solely on visual impression but also on palpation. Fat tissue has a different consistency than muscle, and the ability to distinguish between them is essential for accurate assessment.

Rib visibility is one of the key indicators, but it is not sufficient on its own. A horse may have slightly visible ribs and still be in optimal condition. Therefore, visible ribs do not automatically indicate undernutrition. In athletic horses, this may represent a physiological state corresponding to their energy expenditure.

Musculus Condition Score (MCS)

While BCS describes fat, the Musculus Condition Score evaluates muscle development. It focuses on areas where muscle mass can be reliably assessed:

  • topline
  • shoulder
  • hindquarters
  • neck

Combining BCS and MCS provides a much more accurate picture of the horse’s physical condition than either system alone. A horse may appear “round” but still have insufficient muscle development, which is typical in recreational horses without adequate work.

This brings us to a key point: muscle mass is not primarily determined by diet, but by workload and exercise. Without systematic training, muscle development cannot be expected, regardless of feed quality.

Conformation and genetic background

Every horse has a genetically determined type—light, medium, or heavy (here I am referring to body type, not conformation in the stricter sense, which can be fine, coarse, strong, or weak).

Conformation influences body structure, metabolism, and fat deposition tendencies. An English Thoroughbred will always look different from a draft horse, even at the same BCS.

Ignoring conformation often leads to incorrect conclusions. A sport Thoroughbred in full work may show visible ribs and still be in excellent condition. Similarly, an endurance runner is not expected to appear “round”; excess body weight would instead limit performance.

The same principle applies to show jumping horses. Higher body mass increases strain on the musculoskeletal system and negatively affects biomechanics. Studies confirm that higher BCS is associated with reduced performance and an increased risk of orthopedic problems.

“Hay belly”

A typical example of misinterpretation is the so-called “hay belly.” The horse has a noticeably enlarged abdominal volume, visible ribs, and often a weak topline. However, this is not usually obesity.

This condition is associated with:

  • high intake of bulky forage
  • lower-quality forage
  • insufficient development of abdominal musculature

The digestive tract of the horse contains a large volume of fiber and water, which results in a “drooping” belly appearance. The solution is not to reduce feed energy intake, but to improve forage quality and, most importantly, include appropriate exercise that engages the deep stabilizing muscle system.

Overfeeding as the most common modern issue

Available literature and experts agree on one thing: the prevalence of obesity in horses is increasing, especially among recreational and hobby horses. Excess energy intake without corresponding energy expenditure leads to fat accumulation, often without the owner recognizing the problem.

In practice, obese horses are often not perceived as problematic. On the contrary, they are described as “looking good.” In contrast, leaner horses often raise concern. This shift in perception is significant.

A common argument is “he loves to eat.” However, appetite is not a regulator of correct body condition. Horses are evolutionarily adapted to continuous feed intake, not to restriction in an environment of abundance.

Health consequences of obesity

Obesity is associated with a range of metabolic disorders (Equine Metabolic Syndrome – EMS, insulin dysregulation). These conditions significantly increase the risk of laminitis.

From this perspective, obesity can be more dangerous than mild underconditioning, which is often easier and faster to correct.

Conclusion

Assessing a horse’s condition cannot be reduced to a single visual impression or one parameter. It is necessary to distinguish between fat, muscle mass, and genetic predisposition.

Obesity—which will be addressed in the next article—is not a sign of good care, but a potential health problem. Visible ribs alone do not indicate malnutrition; they often reflect the horse’s type and workload.
